  Roger Pyart very generously bequeathed £10,000 in  his will to Worthing Bridge Club.  In his honour, we   have  purchased a delightful trophy, ‘The Roger Pyart  Vase’, which will be awarded to the winners of the Wednesday afternoon Handicapped Pairs during the Spring Festival week, which as can be seen by a piece by Valerie Benson (“One of his fortunate Bridge partners”), he delighted in competing:

 "Roger learnt to play Bridge at Worthing Bridge Club when he retired to Worthing in 1993.

 He soon became a good player and then a director. Roger had great knowledge of the rules of the game, due to his photographic memory, and directed with great authority.

 His name appears on many of the Winners boards around the Club and he especially liked competing in, and won many trophies in, what is now known as the Spring Festival. He played in the Sussex County Winter League and Green-pointed events for many years.

 Roger was a kind, keen, and considerate partner which I am sure he would wish all those competing for his trophy will emulate."

R I P

It is with sadness that we have to announce the Death of Brian Hart who died peacefully at home on April 26th 2024.

Before Brian retired to Worthing in 1998 he was a Senior Mathematics Lecturer at Sultan Quaboos University Oman, and also at the University of Salford, where in his final years he was in the Overseas Office travelling extensively in the Far East.

 

Brian ran all County Tournaments in the North West for many years and also served on the English Bridge Union Council. He was a panel Tournament Director, played in and won many Tournaments and captained both Lancashire and the North West County Bridge Association.

 

Brian joined Worthing Bridge Club in 1998 and became a Director. He played in the Teams on a Thursday evening and helped win the Chairman's Cup for many years.

Together with his partner Valerie Benson he started running Bridge holidays for Bridge Companies both abroad and in this country.  They ran the Bridge on Cruises for P & O and once for Cunard's 'Queen Victoria' on her Maiden voyage.

• apply equally over intervention and to advancer’s bids i.e. partner of overcaller
• never apply to overcalls
• do not apply to opening bids above 2NT – transfer pre-empts are alerted not announced
• always extend with fuller description where appropriate

Please be tolerant if opponents alert when they should announce or announce when they shouldn’t.

Following an email consultation as to the viability of BBO, we only had 9 positive responses for playing online.  This did not meet the criteria required to run these sessions.  Future BBO sessions are not discounted, but we would need at least 16 regular participants to make the event feasible.  Thanks to all who have supported this in the past.
